Purchasing Guidance

Local Stores

The best local store is in San Mateo: the California Art Supply Company. These people know art supplies and you can rely on their suggestions, substitutions and advice.

University Art has good supplies and some support, but are not in general very knowledgeable about painting supplies. Michael's also has most of my list, but you have to navigate it on your own.

Online purchases

All these lists are linked inside the page to Dick Blick’s or Jerry’s Artarama online stores via pre-filled shopping carts. The supply lists are tuned to the lowest-priced, highest-quality supplies. I have chosen supplies that are not top of the line and eliminated supplies that are poor quality or too cheap to be worth your while. You are always welcome to either splurge or bring whatever supplies you have already. The lists are set up to make it easy to make progress in my class. I ask students not to buy Winton, Artist’s Loft, or Liquitex Basics paints—poor quality paints frustrate beginning color mixer. Cheap white is fine.
